“Then you started explaining why it wasn't your fault.”

The teenager’s ears reddened.

The crowd stayed quiet.

The Biker nodded toward the child.

“You know what she asked me?”

The teenager shook his head.

“She asked me not to be angry at you.”

That landed.

The teenager looked toward the Little Girl.

She sat beside her mother clutching the stuffed bunny.

Dust on one knee.

Scraped palm.

Crutches lying beside her.

The teenager’s shoulders dropped.

The Biker continued:

“She’s the one bleeding.”

“And she’s worried about you being afraid.”

The teenager looked down.

There it was.

The first crack.

Not humiliation.

Recognition.

The Biker did not push harder.

He stepped aside.

“Go talk to her.”

The teenager stared.

“What?”

“Go apologize.”

The teenager looked at the crowd.

The Biker said:

“Not to us.”

“To her.”

The boy took one step.

Stopped.

Then another.

He approached the Little Girl.

Her mother watched him carefully.

The Biker remained nearby but no longer between them.

The teenager crouched.

Not close.

The Little Girl looked at him.

He struggled.

“I…”

Nothing came.

He started again.

“I’m sorry.”

The Little Girl waited.

The Biker had not coached exact words.

That mattered.

An apology copied from somebody else could become another escape.

The teenager looked toward the scraped palm.

Then the crutches.

“I was looking at my phone.”

The Little Girl’s mother stared.

The teenager continued.

“I was running because I was late.”

“I saw the light change and thought I could get across before traffic.”

“I didn’t see you.”

He swallowed.

“But that’s because I wasn’t looking.”

The Biker’s face softened slightly.

Better.

The teenager said:

“I’m sorry I knocked you down.”

The Little Girl looked at him for several seconds.

Then:

“Okay.”

The teenager blinked.

“That’s it?”

The Little Girl frowned.

“What else?”

He almost laughed.

Then remembered he probably should not.

She looked toward him.

“Just be careful with the next person.”

The teenager nodded.

“I will.”

Her mother asked:

“What’s your name?”

The boy hesitated.

Then told her.

“Do your parents live nearby?”

Another hesitation.

“Yes.”

“We need their number.”
