“Who is your father?”

Maya did not answer.

He laughed again, but the confidence had weakened.

“Some airport attorney?”

The cockpit door opened.

Captain Daniel Reeves stepped into the cabin.

He was in his early fifties, with close-cropped dark hair turning gray at the temples.

In one hand he held a printed passenger manifest.

In the other, a secure dispatch sheet.

He spoke briefly to Claire.

She pointed toward Maya.

Then 2A.

Captain Reeves looked at the girl.

Looked at Whitmore.

Then down at the manifest.

His eyes stopped.

Maya watched him read.

Beside Seat 2A was her reservation.

BENNETT, MAYA.

A notation appeared beneath it.

The captain’s face went still.

Whitmore noticed.

“What?”

Captain Reeves did not answer him immediately.

He approached Maya.

“Miss Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“May I confirm your boarding pass?”

She handed it over.

He checked.

2A.

He looked toward Whitmore.

“Mr. Whitmore, may I see yours?”

The businessman’s jaw tightened.

“This has already been handled.”

“Your boarding pass, please.”

Something in the captain’s tone changed the room.

Whitmore pulled the card from his jacket.

Captain Reeves looked.

2C.

He returned both.

Then held up the dispatch sheet.

“Company Operations has instructed us that this aircraft cannot be released until a passenger-assignment incident involving Seat 2A has been documented and corrected.”

Whitmore stared.

“A seat dispute grounded the flight?”

Captain Reeves did not respond.

Claire’s tablet vibrated again.

She read.

Her face went pale.

“Captain.”

She turned the screen toward him.

Captain Reeves read.

Then looked slowly at Maya.

Whitmore noticed.

“What now?”

Nobody answered him.

His irritation grew.

“Who is this child?”

The captain looked at Maya first.

As if asking permission without words.

Maya gave the smallest shrug.

Captain Reeves turned toward Whitmore.

“Her surname is Bennett.”

“I can read.”

The captain continued.

“This aircraft is operated by Bennett Atlantic.”

The cabin went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

Whitmore stared.

For a moment, the connection did not complete.

Then it did.

His eyes moved toward Maya.

“No.”

Maya stood with both hands around the handle of her small carry-on.

Captain Reeves continued carefully.

“Miss Bennett’s reservation is attached to the private travel account of the Bennett family.”

Whitmore’s face changed.

Across the aisle, the woman who had been watching since the beginning covered her mouth.

The man in row three leaned forward.

Claire closed her eyes briefly.

Whitmore looked toward Maya as though she had physically transformed.

“Marcus Bennett?”

Maya said nothing.
