He had told them to wait.

Of course they had ignored him.

The first SUV stopped.

Rear door opened.

A Senior Official stepped out.

Gray suit.

No visible badge.

Two other senior administrators exited behind him.

Another SUV opened.

More officials.

The parking lot grew still.

The Sergeant looked toward them.

Then back at the Senior Officer.

“You call these people?”

The Senior Officer said nothing.

The Sergeant laughed nervously.

“Friends?”

No answer.

The Senior Official walked toward them.

His expression changed as he noticed the baton.

Then the position of the Sergeant’s hands.

Then the Senior Officer’s face.

He stopped approximately ten feet away.

The Sergeant turned.

“Stay back.”

The official did not move.

“This is an active police matter.”

No response.

The Sergeant raised the baton toward him.

“I said stay back.”

The official slowly removed an identification wallet.

Held it open.

The Sergeant barely looked.

“I don’t care who you are.”

The official’s eyes moved past him.

Toward the Senior Officer.

Then his posture changed.

Straight.

Formal.

Respectful.

Every person arriving behind him did the same.

The Sergeant noticed.

His face changed.

The Senior Official spoke clearly.

“Sir.”

One word.

The entire parking lot seemed to shrink.

The Sergeant looked at the Senior Officer.

Then at the line of officials.

Then back.

His grip loosened.

The Senior Official continued:

“The command review team is assembled.”

The Sergeant’s mouth opened.

The Senior Officer said nothing.

The Senior Official glanced at the baton.

Then at the patrol-car hood where the dent remained.

“Do you need assistance?”

The Senior Officer shook his head.

“No.”

The Sergeant’s arm lowered completely.

He stepped backward.

“Sir?”

The Senior Officer looked at him.

The Sergeant swallowed.

“Who are you?”

The Senior Officer’s expression remained unreadable.

The Senior Official answered instead.

“He is the person taking control of the department-wide conduct review beginning this morning.”

Silence.

A civilian near the entrance whispered:

“Oh my God.”

The Sergeant’s face emptied.

The Senior Official continued:

“He is also the man you were just threatening with a baton in front of five officers, three civilians, and approximately seventeen cameras.”

The Sergeant looked around.

For the first time, he actually saw the witnesses.

Phones.

Building cameras.

Dash cameras.

Body cameras.

His own.

Then he looked toward the Senior Officer.

The Senior Officer slowly reached into his back pocket.

No one stopped him now.

He removed a credential.

Opened it.

The Sergeant stared.

The title meant nothing to most people.

It meant everything inside the department.
