“I want her removed from this section.”

The male officer asked:

“On what basis?”

Evelyn looked toward Nia.

Then back.

“She does not belong here.”

Nia almost felt sorry for her.

Almost.

The officer asked:

“Do you have information showing that?”

“I know how these things work.”

He remained expressionless.

“That isn't information.”

The crowd went quiet again.

Evelyn’s composure cracked.

“You're taking her side.”

The officer answered:

“I’m taking the verified facts.”

Evelyn pointed at Melissa.

“She knows who I am.”

Melissa looked miserable.

The officer asked:

“Does that change the facts?”

Evelyn stared.

Then she made the worst choice available.

She reached down.

Grabbed Nia’s suitcase again.

And pulled it toward the general boarding area.

“Fine.”

“If nobody here will enforce standards, I will.”

Melissa shouted:

“Mrs. Whitmore, stop!”

Nia moved one step forward.

The female security officer immediately stepped between them.

“Ma’am, release the bag.”

Evelyn kept one hand around the handle.

“This is absurd.”

“Release it.”

Evelyn looked at Nia.

Then the officer.

Finally, she let go.

The male officer said:

“You were instructed to stop.”

Evelyn stared.

“She's provoking me.”

Nia laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the sentence was astonishing.

“I have barely moved.”

Evelyn looked at the officers.

“She is making a spectacle.”

The female officer answered:

“No, ma’am.”

“You are.”

Several phones captured that.

Evelyn finally understood that she was losing control of the room.

Her strategy changed.

She softened.

“I apologize if this has become unpleasant.”

Nia said nothing.

Evelyn adjusted her coat.

“There has obviously been a misunderstanding.”

Nia looked at her.

“About what?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“The seating.”

“There wasn't.”

“The ticket.”

“You never checked it.”

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“I am trying to end this.”

“You could start by apologizing.”

The crowd became quiet.

Evelyn’s face hardened again.

“I will not apologize for protecting an airline I have supported for twenty years.”

That sentence interested Nia.

Protecting the airline.

Evelyn actually believed it.

The officers exchanged a glance.

The male officer looked toward Melissa.

“Do you want this passenger removed from the gate area?”

Melissa froze.

That was not a simple question for her.

Nia could see the entire organizational problem in the three seconds that followed.

Melissa knew what policy allowed.

She also knew Evelyn’s status.

She knew complaints from Crown Premier members went directly to senior customer-relations leadership.

She knew employees had been disciplined after confrontations with elite travelers.

She knew Evelyn could make one phone call.

And she knew saying yes could become a career decision.

Nia waited.

Melissa finally said:

“I…”

Her voice disappeared.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

She knew too.

Then a man came running from the executive lounge corridor.

Dark suit.

No coat.

Airline identification clipped to his belt.

Two other executives followed.
