Tonight was the night of the merger of the century. The newspapers had been buzzing about it for weeks. Sterling Vanguard was acquiring a massive European logistics fleet, Vanderburg Shipping. The deal was worth forty billion dollars. The signing was happening tonight, right here, in the private VIP alcove of the Gilded Lily. Sarah hurried to table four, the secluded alcove draped in heavy velvet curtains. She began to polish the already gleaming silverware. Her hands moved with practiced efficiency, but her mind was elsewhere. She was thinking about the foreclosure notice she had found in the mail that morning. She was thinking about how she was going to tell her mom they might lose the house.

As she worked, she overheard two men in expensive gray suits standing near the bar. One of them she recognized from the tabloids. Carter Banks, Adrian Sterling’s second-in-command, a man with a smile like a shark. “Is the line secure?” Carter asked, his voice low. He swirled a whiskey, looking around nervously. “It’s done,” the other man whispered. He was balding, sweating despite the air conditioning. “The interpreter has been delayed. Traffic accident. Nothing fatal. Just enough to keep him at the hospital.” “Good,” Carter sneered. “Adrian speaks decent French, but his German is garbage. The contracts for the Vanderburg deal are in the original legal German. By the time he realizes the liability clause has been altered, he’ll have already signed away the majority stake. I’ll be CEO by Monday morning.”

Sarah froze. She was holding a water pitcher, her knuckles turning white. She was invisible, remember? People often forgot that the help had ears. Carter laughed, a dry, cruel sound. “Adrian is too arrogant to admit he can’t read the fine print. He’ll sign, and Klaus Vanderburg is too polite to correct him. It’s the perfect coup.” Sarah’s heart hammered against her ribs. She did not know anything about corporate law, but she knew what betrayal sounded like. Carter Banks was planning to destroy his boss, and he was going to do it tonight, right under the nose of the city’s elite.

She hurried back to the kitchen, her hands shaking. Do nothing, she told herself. You need this job. If you speak up, Gerard will fire you. Who would believe a waitress over a senior executive? But as she pushed through the swinging doors, she felt a sick feeling in her gut. It was not just business. It was theft. “Bennett, move,” Gerard shouted, clapping his hands. “They’re here.”
