Craig stepped back, then forward again, voice rising. “Security! Now!”

Officer Moore looked at Harold like he was waiting for permission. Harold met his eyes and shook his head once—slow, deliberate.

Craig’s eyes widened. “You’re just going to stand there and take this? After everything I said?”

Harold finally spoke, voice calm and clear. “You’re the one who stepped out of line.”

Craig laughed, but it sounded forced. “Line? I’m just doing my job.”

Harold’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen, then looked back at Craig. “Excuse me for a second.”

Craig’s eyes narrowed. “Who is it?”

Harold answered. A voice on the other end—corporate team—said quietly, “Mr. Sullivan? It’s Vince from Charlotte. We’re here with the team. We have the footage.”

Craig’s face went pale. “What footage?”

Harold didn’t answer. He just held the phone, eyes steady on Craig.

The corporate team walked in—three executives, lanyards swinging. They stopped near the entrance. One of them was holding a tablet, showing live feed from the store’s security system. The feed clearly showed Craig’s face, the basket swing, the entire exchange.

Craig’s knees buckled. Not all the way, but enough. His hand shot to the counter behind him. His lanyard swung against his chest. The same lanyard he’d worn like a crown all afternoon now looked like a noose.

“Mr. Sullivan,” one of the executives said. “We were on our way. We saw what happened on the security cameras.”

Craig stammered. “This is a misunderstanding. I was just following protocol.”

“There is no protocol at Apex Collective that tells you to refuse service based on the color of someone’s skin,” Harold’s voice cut through. “I know that for a fact because I wrote every protocol this company has.”

Harold turned to Officer Moore. Moore had taken two full steps backward. His hands were off his belt. His shoulders were caved in. He was staring at the floor like it might open up and swallow him.

“And you,” Harold said, “you were about to physically remove me from my own store based on zero evidence and one man’s prejudice. We’ll be having a very different conversation about your contract with this location.”

Moore said nothing. He couldn’t even look up.
