Three Black Belts Called the New Girl an Easy Match — Then She Asked for a Three-on-One

The first black belt laughed because she was small.

The second laughed because she was quiet.

The third laughed because she had written “beginner” on the visitor form.

Coach Daniel Ward did not laugh.

He looked at the form again.

Then at the girl.

Then back at the three black belts.

“Easy match?” he asked.

Marcus Cole shrugged.

“She said beginner.”

Derek Shaw smiled.

“She’s half Owen’s size.”

Owen Briggs folded his arms.

“Not half.”

The new girl looked at him.

“You want a calculator?”

The room laughed.

Owen smiled.

“Okay. I like her.”

Her name was Leah Morgan.

Twenty-four years old.

Five feet three.

One hundred twenty-two pounds.

Dark hair tied back.

Plain black athletic shirt.

Gray training pants.

No patches.

No rank.

No school logo.

Nothing about her said experienced.

That was partly intentional.

She had walked into Iron Gate Martial Arts in suburban Denver ten minutes before the Saturday open mat.

The gym was known for hard training.

Good coaching.

Strong tournament results.

And, lately, three black belts who had become very comfortable being the people everybody expected to win.

Marcus was twenty-six.

Fast.

Explosive.

Loved pressure.

He attacked early and made people solve problems before they were ready.

Derek was twenty-eight.

Longer.

More patient.

Counterfighter.

He liked waiting until someone made a bad decision and then making the mistake expensive.

Owen was thirty-one.

Heavy.

Strong.

Calm.

Almost impossible to move once he settled his weight.

Different styles.

Same confidence.

They trained together often.

Won together.

Joked together.

And that morning, they had decided the quiet new girl would be a good warm-up.

Daniel noticed.

He let the joke continue just long enough to see where it was going.

Leah signed the waiver.

Read every line.

Asked where visitors should put shoes.

Asked whether the mat boundary was live or reset.

Asked how the gym handled taps during multi-person drills.

That last question made Daniel look up.

“We don’t usually do multi-person drills.”

Leah nodded.

“Okay.”

Marcus heard.

He grinned.

“Planning a prison break?”

Leah looked at him.

“No.”

Derek laughed.

Owen said,

“She’s serious.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You train somewhere?”

Leah shook her head.

“Not currently.”

“That means yes.”

“That means not currently.”

He smiled.

“Fair.”

Open mat started.

Daniel paired Leah with a blue belt named Sarah for movement drills.

No live submissions.

Just control.

Leah moved slowly.

Very slowly.

Marcus watched from the wall.

“She’s stiff.”

Derek nodded.

“Easy.”

Owen said nothing.

He had noticed one thing.

Leah never crossed her feet when changing direction.

Beginners did that constantly.

Not all.

Enough.

Sarah took top position.

Leah defended.

Sarah advanced.

Leah gave ground.

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Yep.”

Then Leah escaped.

Not explosively.

Not with strength.

She waited until Sarah shifted weight.

Turned.

Recovered.

Reset.

Sarah smiled.

“Nice.”

Leah nodded.

“Thanks.”

Second exchange.

Sarah controlled longer.

Leah did not panic.

Third.

Leah lost position completely.

Tapped before pressure became uncomfortable.

Marcus grinned.

“Easy match.”

Leah looked over.

She heard him.

Daniel heard him too.

“Marcus.”

“What?”

“Enough.”

Marcus raised his hands.

“Just talking.”

Leah stood.

“Who’s the easiest of the three?”

The room went quiet.

Marcus smiled slowly.

“What?”

She pointed.

“You called me easy.”

“Yes.”

“So who’s easiest?”

Derek laughed.

Owen looked at Daniel.

Daniel did not intervene.

Not yet.

Marcus pointed at himself.

“You want a round?”

Leah looked at all three.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“Then why ask?”

Leah said,

“I want all three.”

Silence.

Owen actually laughed.

Derek looked at her like she had made a joke.

Marcus did not.

He looked delighted.

“All three?”

Leah nodded.

“Three-on-one.”

Now Daniel stepped in.
