Vivian looked toward her.

Then the officer.

“Who said that?”

“Operations.”

“Who specifically?”

“Executive flight coordination.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

“Call back.”

The Security Officer blinked.

“Why?”

“Because there’s obviously been a mistake.”

Edward looked toward Vivian.

Everything had now been verified.

Name.

ID.

Aircraft.

Manifest.

Operations.

Still she refused.

This was the moment Edward stopped viewing the encounter as a misunderstanding.

Vivian no longer lacked information.

She lacked willingness.

The difference mattered.

The white female Security Officer said:

“Ms. Cross, we don’t have grounds to remove him.”

Vivian lowered her voice.

“You work for this terminal.”

“Yes.”

“I’m directing you.”

“And I’m telling you executive operations confirmed him.”

Vivian looked around.

The lounge had become an audience.

That was now driving her.

Edward recognized it.

He had seen executives destroy themselves because admitting one mistake in public felt worse than making five more.

Vivian pointed toward Edward.

“This man is creating a disturbance.”

Edward looked around.

Nobody had raised a voice except her.

The security officer did too.

“What disturbance?”

“He’s antagonizing staff.”

The male Security Officer asked:

“How?”

Vivian looked toward Edward.

“You’ve heard him.”

Edward waited.

She had no answer.

Then the lounge doors opened.

Three men entered.

All in tailored suits.

One carried a leather folder.

Another was Whitaker Aviation’s Chief Operating Officer.

The third was the President of Flight Operations.

Behind them came Captain Michael Reeves, the commander assigned to the white jet outside.

Vivian saw them.

Her entire posture changed.

Immediately.

Shoulders back.

Professional smile.

Authority recognition.

She stepped forward.

“Mr. Langford.”

The COO barely looked at her.

His eyes moved across the lounge.

Found Edward.

Relief crossed his face.

He walked directly toward him.

“Chairman.”

Silence.

Not dramatic movie silence.

Real silence.

The kind created when several people simultaneously realize the same thing.

Vivian froze.

Melissa’s mouth opened.

The security officers looked toward Edward.

The banker slowly lowered his phone.

Edward remained seated.

The COO stopped in front of him.

“We’ve been looking for you.”

Edward looked at his watch.

“You’re twelve minutes early.”

The COO smiled nervously.

“We moved faster than expected.”

Captain Reeves approached.

“Mr. Whitaker, the aircraft is fueled and flight plan is filed.”

Edward nodded.

“Thank you, Michael.”

The captain glanced toward Vivian.

Then security.

He sensed the tension.

“What happened?”

Edward looked toward Vivian.

She had gone pale.

Not slightly.

Completely.
