Because verification had somewhere to begin.

At the roadside, the first officer took her license back toward his cruiser.

The second remained with her.

The cash still sat inside the saddlebag.

The Black rider kept her hands visible.

The second officer looked toward her clothing.

Then the red handbag.

“Expensive bag.”

She stared.

“Yes.”

“Bike too.”

“Yes.”

“You doing well for a mechanic.”

She did not answer.

He smiled.

“Touchy subject?”

“No.”

“Then why so quiet?”

She looked toward his camera.

“I’m trying not to give you anything you can describe later as aggressive.”

The officer’s smile vanished.

“You think we’re out here framing people?”

“I think cameras exist because memory and reports don’t always agree.”

“You rehearsed that?”

“No.”

“I’ve lived long enough to learn it.”

The first officer returned.

“No warrants.”

The Black woman nodded.

“Good.”

“Bike’s registered.”

“Yes.”

“Insurance current.”

“Yes.”

“Still have the cash.”

She stared.

“The cash existed before you ran my license.”

The officer crossed his arms.

“Here’s the problem.”

She waited.

“You’re carrying almost thirty grand.”

“That is not a problem.”

“It can be.”

“For what reason?”

“Money connected to criminal activity can be seized.”

“Correct.”

The officer looked surprised that she agreed.

She continued.

“So what criminal activity are you connecting mine to?”

The officer’s mouth tightened.

“Bundled cash.”

“That describes packaging.”

“Large amount.”

“That describes quantity.”

“Highway known for trafficking.”

“That describes geography.”

The second officer stepped closer.

“You got an answer for everything.”

“Yes.”

The Black woman pointed toward the envelope.

“And documents for this.”

The first officer looked at the paperwork again.

Then away.

She understood.

He did not want to read it yet.

Reading might end the interesting part.

Instead he said:

“We’re going to temporarily seize the currency.”

The Black woman’s expression hardened.

“For what investigation?”

“That’s not for roadside debate.”

“Am I under arrest?”

“No.”

“Am I suspected of a specific crime?”

“We’re investigating.”

“What?”

The officer became irritated.

“You keep asking the same question.”

“Because you keep giving different versions of no answer.”

The second officer moved toward her.

“Watch your attitude.”

The Black rider looked at him.

“Describe my attitude.”

“What?”

“Describe it.”

“You’re argumentative.”

“Am I shouting?”

“No.”

“Am I refusing instructions?”

He paused.

“Am I moving toward you?”

“No.”

“Am I threatening anyone?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Then write down what I actually do.”

The first officer stepped closer.

“You think you know how this works.”

The Black rider looked directly into his camera.

“I know how a receipt works.”

That was when they removed the money.
