The Guard was talking with another staff member.

Something about the image bothered her.

Not poverty.

Not clothing.

The CEO had spent enough years in housing programs to know that assumptions based on clothing usually said more about the observer than the person being observed.

What bothered her was his posture.

He was not trying to enter.

Not protesting.

Not asking anyone for attention.

He sat as though being excluded had simply confirmed something he had already expected.

The CEO finished the sentence.

Then paused.

“Excuse me for a moment.”

People looked confused.

She handed the microphone to the Board Chair.

Then stepped from the platform.

The Security Guard approached.

“Everything okay?”

She pointed toward the curb.

“Who is that?”

The Guard looked.

“Walk-in.”

“What does that mean?”

“No invitation.”

The CEO waited.

“And?”

“Not on the guest list.”

She looked at his clothing.

The Guard understood the question.

“Also not appropriately dressed.”

The CEO’s expression changed.

“For a construction site?”

“It’s a formal event.”

She looked at him.

“You removed him because of his shirt?”

“He wasn’t authorized.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

The Guard shifted.

“He had some kind of card.”

“What card?”

“Didn’t matter.”

The CEO stared at him.

Then walked away before she said something she might regret.

She crossed the grass.

The Single Father noticed her approaching but continued reading.

The CEO stopped several feet away.

“Excuse me.”

He looked up.

Up close, she noticed the exhaustion in his face.

Not weakness.

Years.

The kind that accumulated when responsibilities never quite ended.

“I’m the CEO of the foundation.”

“I know.”

That surprised her.

She pointed toward the curb.

“May I?”

The Single Father looked at the expensive dress.

Then the concrete.

“You’ll ruin that.”

“I’ve ruined more expensive things.”

He almost smiled.

The CEO sat.

Several guests turned to watch.

The Single Father folded the program.

The CEO said, “I owe you an apology.”

“You don’t.”

“I think I do.”

“You didn’t remove me.”

“I’m responsible for the people representing this organization.”

He looked toward the tent.

“That’s a heavy standard.”

“Yes.”

She studied him.

“Why did you come?”

The Single Father looked at the project rendering.

“Wanted to see the site.”

“Why?”

He remained quiet.

The CEO waited.

Finally:

“I’ve followed the project for a while.”

“Professional interest?”

“Something like that.”

The CEO sensed resistance.

Not hostility.

Privacy.

She respected it.

“Would you like to come inside?”

The Single Father looked toward the Guard.

“No.”

The CEO frowned.

“No?”

“I came for the groundbreaking.”

“You’re here.”

“I can see it from here.”

She looked at him.

Then laughed softly.

He did not.
