“Sir?”

“How many complaints have reached your office about this property in the last twelve months?”

The Regional President hesitated.

The Chairman’s eyes sharpened.

“That was not a difficult question.”

“Twenty-three.”

The lobby seemed to contract.

The Hotel Manager turned.

“Twenty-three?”

The Chairman looked at him.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

The Regional President answered instead.

“Some were categorized as routine service dissatisfaction.”

The Chairman’s eyes moved to him.

“Some?”

The Regional President corrected himself.

“Most.”

The Chairman nodded.

“Interesting.”

Then he looked toward the young receptionist.

“What is your name?”

She answered.

Voice shaking.

The Chairman nodded.

“How long have you worked here?”

“Fourteen months.”

“Have you seen this before?”

The entire lobby froze.

The Manager stared at her.

The Chairman saw.

So did she.

Her fear returned.

The Chairman stepped slightly sideways, placing his body between her sightline and the Manager.

“You are not answering him.”

He said it gently.

“You are answering me.”

The receptionist swallowed.

“Yes.”

The Manager began:

“Sir—”

The Chairman raised one finger.

Silence.

He looked back at the receptionist.

“How often?”

She hesitated.

Then:

“Sometimes.”

The Chairman waited.

She understood he wanted more.

“Guests who look…”

She stopped.

The Chairman nodded.

“Different from expectations?”

“Yes.”

“Older guests?”

“Yes.”

“People wearing casual clothes?”

“Yes.”

“Guests without luxury luggage?”

“Yes.”

She glanced toward the Manager.

Then:

“Sometimes Black guests.”

Silence.

Heavy.

The Chairman did not dramatize it.

He simply asked:

“What happens?”

The receptionist looked at the desk.

“They get asked for more verification.”

“How much more?”

“Additional ID.”

“Confirmation emails.”

“Credit cards.”

“Sometimes management approval.”

“Does every guest receive those checks?”

“No.”

The Hotel Manager’s face had become gray.

The Chairman asked:

“Were you trained to do this?”

“No.”

“Who instructed you?”

She said nothing.

The answer was obvious.

The Chairman looked at the Manager.

Then toward the Regional President.

“Do not fire him.”

Everyone looked surprised.

The Hotel Manager almost collapsed with relief.

Too soon.

The Chairman continued:

“Not yet.”

Relief disappeared.

“I want him working.”

The Regional President frowned.

“Sir?”

“Exactly as usual.”

The Chairman retrieved his access card.

“Forty-eight hours.”

The Hotel Director looked confused.

The Chairman turned toward him.

“Nobody announces my presence.”

“No employee-wide message.”

“No briefing.”

“No emergency cleanup.”

“No shredding.”
