“There’s a problem.”

The Senior Officer sat in the living room.

His wife nearby.

His son on the stairs.

“What?”

“The Sergeant filed his report.”

The legal officer paused.

“It says you were belligerent.”

The Senior Officer’s eyes narrowed.

“It says you raised your voice.”

His wife looked toward him.

The legal officer continued.

“It says you resisted exiting the vehicle.”

Silence.

“It says physical control was necessary because you became confrontational.”

The Senior Officer leaned back.

“What about the witness?”

“No mention.”

“The SUV?”

“No mention.”

“The second officer?”

“No mention.”

“The recording?”

“Obviously no mention.”

The Senior Officer stared at the scratched medal on the table.

The legal officer added:

“His body camera is listed as having experienced a technical issue.”

The Senior Officer laughed once.

No humor.

His wife whispered:

“What?”

He held up one finger.

The legal officer continued.

“The report has already been entered into the system.”

The Senior Officer closed his eyes.

The roadside humiliation had lasted less than half an hour.

Now it had become an official story.

A false one.

That was worse.

“Preserve everything.”

“We are.”

“Get the witness statement.”

“Already requested.”

“And the recording.”

“Yes.”

The Senior Officer looked toward his son.

The teenager was watching.

He had heard enough.

“Do not release anything publicly yet.”

The legal officer paused.

“Understood.”

The Senior Officer ended the call.

His wife stared.

“He lied?”

“Yes.”

She sat beside him.

“Why?”

The Senior Officer looked at the medal.

“Because the truth makes him look bad.”

His son spoke from the stairs.

“So he gets to rewrite it?”

The Senior Officer looked toward him.

“No.”

The boy waited.

The Senior Officer’s voice hardened.

“No, he does not.”

Two days later, a folder appeared.

Seven complaints.

Seven different people.

Seven encounters.

The legal officer placed the papers across a desk.

The Senior Officer read.

First complaint.

Young sailor stopped near the installation.

Ordered out.

Searched.

Released without citation.

Complaint dismissed.

Second.

A corporal questioned beside his own vehicle.

Identification mocked.

Registration checked repeatedly.
