“Dad makes her less scary.”

The CEO looked offended.

“I’m not scary.”

The girl stared.

Then left.

The Single Dad laughed until his stomach hurt.

The CEO folded her arms.

“Less scary?”

“She likes you.”

“That is not what she said.”

“She said you make her father happy.”

The CEO softened.

Then:

“She asked when we’re getting married.”

“Yes.”

The Single Dad looked at her.

The CEO looked back.

A strange silence.

Not uncomfortable.

Meaningful.

He said:

“That sounded like a question.”

“It was her question.”

“I know.”

The CEO’s eyes narrowed.

“Are you asking me something?”

“Not in the kitchen.”

“Why not?”

“You deserve better.”

She smiled.

“You’ve learned.”

He proposed six months later.

Not at a gala.

Not on a private jet.

Not at a restaurant.

At the apartment.

They still owned it.

Kept it because the daughter wanted the option during school weeks.

Christmas Eve.

Again.

The CEO arrived first.

He told her he had forgotten something upstairs.

She complained.

He unlocked the old apartment.

Dark.

Then lights came on.

Christmas tree.

Same place.

Same entry table.

The camel coat hung over the same chair.

The CEO stared.

“No.”

The Single Dad smiled.

She covered her mouth.

“No.”

He walked toward the table.

A cream envelope rested there.

She started crying before he opened it.

“You’re horrible.”

“You haven’t read it.”

“I know what this is.”

“Do you?”

He handed it to her.

She broke the seal.

Inside was one page.

No legal language.

No corporate logo.

Just a few lines.

You came here once carrying proof that my life was not what I thought it was.

Then you stayed long enough to change it again.

I don’t want to build a life around what happened to us.

I want to build one around what we chose afterward.

She looked up.

The Single Dad was on one knee.

The CEO began crying harder.

He laughed.

“You have to let me ask.”

“I already know.”

“Please.”

She covered her mouth.

Nodded.

He asked.

She said yes before the sentence finished.

Then hit his shoulder because he had made her cry.

He stood.

She kissed him.

Long.

Then pulled back.

“Did HR approve this?”

He stared.

She laughed through tears.

“That was revenge.”

He kissed her again.

Their daughter jumped out from the hallway.

“I knew it!”

The Single Dad nearly had a heart attack.

“You were here?”

“Obviously.”
