One:
Mia could decline any drill and leave the mat without needing Naomi’s approval.
Two:
Naomi would not become her unofficial coach.
Mia agreed immediately to the first and reluctantly to the second.
Naomi watched the first two classes.
Then stopped.
That was difficult.
She wanted to monitor everything.
Correct everything.
Protect.
Mia noticed.
“You’re doing the face.”
“What face?”
“The hovering sister face.”
“I’m twenty feet away.”
“Emotionally, you’re on the mat.”
Naomi laughed.
Then left for coffee during class.
Progress.
Ryan did not teach Mia.
Not initially.
When he returned to beginner instruction a month later, Elena asked Naomi first whether she objected.
Naomi answered:
“It isn’t my class.”
“Mia?”
Mia said:
“I’m fine.”
Ryan taught.
Professional.
Nothing dramatic.
He treated Mia like every other student.
That was the correct outcome.
No special guilt.
No avoidance.
No performance.
Three months after the clip, Naomi returned to Atlas alone.
Elena was surprised.
“You looking for Mia?”
“No.”
“Then?”
Naomi held a small gym bag.
Elena smiled.
“Interesting.”
“Don’t.”
“I said one word.”
“It was a loaded word.”
“Fair.”
Naomi had spent weeks thinking about training.
Not the Ryan incident.
Herself.
The eleven seconds had awakened something she had not expected.
Not competitive hunger.
Movement.
She had missed moving with skilled people.
Missed puzzles.
Missed learning.
What she had not missed was turning every round into proof.
Maybe those could be separated.
She was not sure.
So Naomi returned.
One class.
No commitment.
Elena paired her with Nina.
Perfect.
Nina knew exactly who she was.
Said nothing about the video.
They rolled.
Nina caught Naomi in a submission after four minutes.
Naomi tapped.
Nina released immediately.
“Nice.”
Naomi stared at the ceiling.
Then laughed.
Nina frowned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Did I hurt you?”
“No.”
Naomi sat up.
“That was good.”
“Getting submitted?”
“Yes.”
Nina smiled.
“Welcome back to being weird.”
Naomi trained again Thursday.
Then Saturday.
Soon she joined regularly.
Ryan avoided her at first.
Naomi noticed.
Did not care.
One evening there were odd numbers.
Elena looked around.
Ryan and Naomi both realized what was about to happen.
Elena asked:
“You two okay working?”
Naomi looked at Ryan.
Ryan looked at Naomi.
He answered:
“Only if she wants.”
Good.
Naomi nodded.
“Yes.”
They slapped hands.
No audience.
No phones.
No “try to keep up.”
Five-minute technical round.
Ryan controlled most of it.
As he should.
He was an active black belt.
Naomi had years of wrestling and grappling but had spent two years training irregularly.
Ryan passed her guard twice.
She escaped once.
Caught him in one transition.
He recovered.
Later he secured a clean submission.
Naomi tapped.
Ryan released instantly.
They reset.
