She introduced herself as Emily. Her tractor had stopped while she was preparing land for planting. She was frustrated and polite, which is a combination Jack trusted more than charm. He listened, asked where it had died, asked what it had sounded like in the minute before it died, and told her he would inspect it immediately. She thanked him and waited quietly while he began. She did not hover. She did not suggest the diagnosis. She stood in the shade of the bay door and watched the road as if the road might still owe her an afternoon of work.

After he opened the engine compartment, Jack saw the problem was serious. Several components had worn out. A damaged fuel system had caused more trouble on the way down. Repairing it properly would take hours. He told her so before he took the next bolt off, because surprise bills were a kind of lie he did not tell. Emily nodded. Planting did not wait on a comfortable estimate. She asked only whether it could be done today. He said he would try. She said that was enough.

As he worked, they talked in pieces. She mentioned crops and farmland, the ordinary inventory of a person who lived inside a season. She never talked about money or success. She never named a company. She never corrected him when he assumed the tractor was the main machine she had. Her manner made him believe she was another hard-working farmer trying to keep an operation running. He had met that farmer a hundred times. He liked that farmer. He did not charge that farmer for the fear in the room.

The repair was difficult. He removed damaged parts, cleaned clogged lines, and adjusted the engine until the timing stopped arguing with him. Sweat rolled down his face as the heat thickened. He refused to rush. Reliable equipment was not a courtesy to a farmer. It was the difference between a window of weather and a lost week. Hours later the engine started with a strong roar. It ran more smoothly than it had any right to, given the mud and the years. Emily’s face brightened with relief. She thanked him more than once. Planting season was close. Every delayed day could become a serious problem. He knew that sentence. He had heard it from people who were not exaggerating.

When he calculated the bill, he hesitated. The repairs were extensive. Emily looked concerned about cost in the way people look concerned when they are doing math they do not want to say aloud. He remembered his own unpaid bills. He charged a small amount above the price of parts. The payment barely covered his expenses. He felt it was the right thing, which is not the same as feeling it was painless. Emily was surprised. She thanked him sincerely and drove away. The tractor disappeared down the dusty road. Jack returned to the quiet garage. He had no idea the woman in work boots was hiding a fact that would rearrange his year. He wiped his hands, wrote the ticket down as a thin day, and locked the doors at dusk.
