Lauren was told she could no longer volunteer in certain student-access areas while the complaints were reviewed.
That meeting was supposed to happen Friday.
Tomorrow.
Instead, Thursday afternoon, she took Maya's wheelchair.
Now Daniel looked at her across the pickup plaza.
"This isn't the first incident."
Lauren laughed nervously.
"I have no idea what you're suggesting."
Daniel's voice remained level.
"You blocked the accessible pickup lane twice."
"That was parking confusion."
"You moved equipment away from disabled students."
"That's ridiculous."
"You've made repeated comments about accommodations."
"I've made comments about fairness."
"To children."
Lauren looked around.
More phones were out now.
She lowered her voice.
"You are trying to make me look like some kind of monster."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward the wheelchair.
"You did this part yourself."
Her face flushed.
Dr. Grant stepped between them slightly.
"Mrs. Whitmore, we need to move this conversation inside."
Lauren glanced toward the doors.
"Fine."
Officer Hall stepped forward.
"Your son can wait with another approved guardian while we speak."
Lauren looked at him.
"Why?"
Dr. Grant held a white envelope.
Maya noticed it for the first time.
So did Lauren.
"What is that?"
Dr. Grant looked at her.
"Formal notice."
"Of what?"
Dr. Grant handed it over.
Lauren did not take it immediately.
"What is it?"
Daniel looked at Maya.
Maya looked back.
Her father said nothing.
He had known this part was coming.
Not because he controlled the school.
Because two hours earlier, before pickup, Dr. Grant had called him.
The review of Lauren's earlier conduct had already been completed.
The school district had made a decision.
Today's incident had not created it.
It had only made the timing impossible to ignore.
Lauren finally took the envelope.
She pulled out the paper.
Read the first line.
Her face changed.
"What?"
Nobody answered.
She read farther.
"This is insane."
Dr. Grant spoke clearly.
"Effective immediately, you are no longer permitted to enter school property except for specifically scheduled administrative meetings approved in advance."
Lauren looked up.
"You cannot do that."
"The district already has."
"I have a child here."
"Pickup arrangements can be made at the designated off-campus transfer point."
Lauren stared.
"This is because of him."
She pointed at Daniel.
Dr. Grant's expression hardened.
"No."
Lauren turned toward Maya.
"This is because of her."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Do not point at my daughter."
Officer Hall moved closer too.
Lauren lowered her hand.
Dr. Grant continued.
"This decision is based on documented conduct across multiple incidents involving multiple students."
Lauren looked around.
Parents were watching.
Teachers too.
The crowd had become an audience she could no longer control.
She shook the paper.
"This is a setup."
Daniel said nothing.
Lauren pointed toward his phone.
"You've been collecting complaints about me."
"I've been preserving reports."
"You went after me."
"I asked the school to protect students."
"Same thing."
"No."
Daniel's voice remained calm.
"It's only the same thing if protecting them requires stopping you."
Lauren stared at him.
Parker spoke softly.
"Mom."
She turned.
He looked near tears.
"Can we just go?"
That finally changed her.
