They stood there for one second, each holding opposite sides of the transparent panel.

The Little Girl looked between them.

“Are you fighting over paper?”

The Father released his hand immediately.

“No.”

The HOA President almost slammed the cover shut.

Then realized several neighbors were watching.

A jogger had stopped.

A man walking a golden retriever had turned.

A woman near the mailboxes held her phone.

The HOA President’s hand remained suspended.

She changed tactics.

“You're welcome to read it.”

The Father nodded.

“Thank you for granting access to the public notice board.”

She ignored the sarcasm.

He began scanning.

Meeting notice.

Roofing contractor update.

Summer landscaping schedule.

Clubhouse reservation rules.

Noise policy.

Then:

AMENDMENT TO ARTICLE XII — TEMPORARY RECREATIONAL WATER FEATURES.

His eyes stopped.

The HOA President saw him stop.

Her expression changed.

The Father reached toward the page.

The Little Girl squeezed closer.

“What does it say?”

“Give me a second.”

The HOA President spoke quickly.

“That amendment is not applicable.”

The Father looked at her.

“I haven't read it yet.”

“It concerns common-area facilities.”

He looked back at the notice.

The heading did not say common areas.

He started reading aloud.

“Effective immediately upon posting…”

The HOA President interrupted.

“It was posted incorrectly.”

The Father continued.

“…small temporary recreational pools with a maximum filled depth of thirty-six inches are permitted within enclosed private rear yards…”

Silence.

The Little Girl looked toward him.

Then toward the HOA President.

The Father read the next line.

“…provided they are drained when not supervised and removed or secured when not in active seasonal use.”

He stopped.

His daughter’s pool was thirty inches deep.

Inside an enclosed private rear yard.

Exactly the thing being described.

The HOA President folded her arms.

“That does not change the current violation.”

The Father laughed.

“What?”

“The original notice predates the amendment.”

“And?”

“You were in violation when cited.”

“But you drained it today.”

“The enforcement action relates to the original citation.”

The Father stared at her.

“No.”

She lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

He pointed toward the first sentence.

“Effective immediately.”

She said nothing.

He looked at the posted date.

Yesterday.

9:00 a.m.

The amendment had taken effect more than twenty-nine hours before she entered his backyard.

The Little Girl moved closer to the paper.

Her finger traced along the bottom.

The Father looked down.

“What?”

She squinted.

“Is that her name?”

The Father followed her finger.

Signature line.

HOA PRESIDENT — APPROVED FOR POSTING

Below it:

The HOA President’s signature.

Her exact signature.

Large.

Blue ink.

The Father went silent.

The Little Girl looked up at the woman.

“You signed it.”

The HOA President’s face drained.

The Little Girl pointed again.
