Then:

ASSIGNED HOST: ADRIAN COLE

The room became completely still.

Adrian’s face lost color.

Richard’s voice dropped.

“You were assigned to him.”

Adrian stared at the tablet.

“I didn't see—”

“You were assigned to him.”

“I thought—”

“That is the problem.”

Richard turned toward the officers.

“Remove the cuffs.”

They had never fully locked both wrists.

The first officer pulled the metal away from Marcus’s left wrist.

A red mark circled the skin.

Marcus stood slowly.

His knee protested.

Richard reached toward him.

Marcus lifted one hand.

“No.”

Richard stopped.

Marcus adjusted his cardigan.

Then picked up his cracked phone.

He looked around.

Customers.

Employees.

Phones.

Adrian.

Officers.

Then Richard.

The owner said:

“I am so sorry.”

Marcus stared.

“For which part?”

Richard did not answer quickly enough.

Marcus continued.

“The twenty-minute delay?”

“The accusation?”

“Your manager refusing to verify?”

“The police?”

“The floor?”

Richard’s expression tightened.

“All of it.”

Marcus looked toward Adrian.

The manager finally found his voice.

“Mr. Hale, I sincerely apologize.”

Marcus turned fully toward him.

“Why?”

Adrian blinked.

“For what happened.”

“No.”

“Why are you apologizing?”

Adrian looked toward Richard.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Look at me.”

Adrian did.

“You thought I had no appointment.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You weren't on my standard schedule.”

“You were told I was in the executive queue.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You saw the confirmation email.”

“It could have been forwarded.”

“You had employees who found my name.”

Adrian looked down.

“You still called police.”

“I called security.”

“The officers were already nearby.”

Marcus nodded.

“Fine.”

“You escalated to security knowing verification was available.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I made a mistake.”

Marcus looked toward his clothes.

Then at Adrian.

“What did you see when you looked at me?”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“I don't understand.”

“Yes, you do.”

“No.”

Marcus gestured toward the showroom.

“When that older couple walked in, did you ask who invited them?”

Silence.

“Did you ask whether their email had been forwarded?”

Silence.

“Did you ask whether they had a banker?”

Adrian’s cheeks reddened.

“That's different.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Marcus almost smiled.

“There it is.”

Adrian realized too late.
