“Hands away from your belt.”

“Sir.”

“Now.”

The officer lowered both arms.

Another uniformed officer arrived from the unmarked SUV.

Then another.

The Captain pointed.

“Secure his weapon.”

The officer stared.

“What?”

“Captain.”

“Do it.”

The arriving sergeant looked uncomfortable.

Still obeyed.

“Officer, place your hands where I can see them.”

The officer looked toward the Internal Affairs Director.

“You set me up.”

The Director’s expression remained flat.

“I drove down a public street.”

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted this.”

“No.”

“You came into my district dressed like that.”

The Captain stared.

“Dressed like what?”

The officer realized.

Too late.

He stopped.

The Director said:

“Finish.”

No answer.

The Captain stepped closer.

“No.”

“I want to hear it too.”

The officer looked around.

Phones everywhere.

He closed his mouth.

The Director put his credential away.

Then looked toward the dark body camera.

“Why is your camera off?”

The officer’s eyes flicked downward.

“It malfunctioned.”

“Again?”

That single word hit harder than the badge.

The officer looked up sharply.

The Director continued.

“Seven prior complaints.”

“Five camera failures.”

“Two undocumented searches.”

“One use-of-force report contradicted by private security video.”

The officer stared.

“You read my file.”

“Yes.”

“You came here for me.”

“I came here because your name appears too often.”

The officer’s voice rose.

“So you provoked me.”

The Director’s cheek still burned.

He said quietly:

“I asked why you stopped me.”

The officer had no answer.

The crowd did.

Someone behind them said:

“He didn’t do anything.”

Another:

“I filmed all of it.”

A woman stepped forward.

“He pulled the man out after he asked about the camera.”

The officer turned.

“Stay back.”

The Captain snapped:

“You do not give orders right now.”

The officer went silent.

The Captain looked toward the sergeant.

“Temporary relief from duty.”

The officer stared.

“What?”

“Pending investigation.”

“You can't do this based on a ten-second clip.”

The Director said:

“It is not based on a clip.”

The officer looked at him.

The Director continued.

“It is based on what happened.”

“Video will document it.”

“Witnesses will document it.”

“Your report will document whatever you decide to write.”

“And the discrepancy between those things will matter.”

The officer’s jaw tightened.

The Captain instructed the sergeant to collect the body camera, radio, and vehicle keys.

The officer complied slowly.

Then said:

“Am I under arrest?”

The Captain looked toward the Director.

The Director shook his head once.

“No.”

The officer almost smiled.

Relief.

Premature.

The Director continued.
