One attorney pointed.

“That is—”

The Judge raised her hand.

“Do not interfere.”

Even pinned against the wall, she was thinking about consequences.

No crowd rushing.

No grabbing the officer.

No chaotic video.

No situation that could become something else.

The officer looked at her as though her composure offended him.

“You don’t give orders here.”

The Judge’s voice became almost quiet.

“You have five seconds to release my jacket.”

The officer laughed.

“And then what?”

She looked toward the courthouse doors.

“Then you will understand the problem.”

The officer tightened his grip.

“People like you always think somebody important is coming.”

The Judge stared at him.

“No.”

“I think the court clerk is.”

The heavy east doors opened.

A court clerk rushed outside carrying a stack of calendars.

She saw the scene.

Stopped dead.

Files across the ground.

The Judge against the wall.

Officer gripping her blazer.

The clerk’s face went white.

“Officer!”

He turned.

The clerk almost dropped the calendars.

“Let go of her!”

The officer frowned.

“She’s attempting unauthorized—”

“That’s the judge!”

Silence.

The officer blinked.

The clerk pointed toward the Black woman.

“That is the judge assigned to Courtroom Four!”

The officer’s hand opened immediately.

The Judge’s blazer fell back into place.

The clerk rushed down the steps.

“Judge, are you all right?”

The officer stared.

The Judge straightened slowly.

She did not look at him first.

She looked at the papers scattered across the steps.

One folder had opened completely.

A photograph from an evidence exhibit lay face down near the railing.

The Judge bent to pick it up.

The clerk tried to help.

The Judge said:

“Please gather the files.”

The officer finally spoke.

“Judge, I didn’t—”

She raised one hand.

He stopped.

Her face showed no triumph.

Only disappointment.

“You had my credential.”

The officer swallowed.

“I thought—”

“Yes.”

She looked at him.

“You did.”

The Judge collected the last page.

Closed the briefcase.

Then walked through the courthouse doors.

The clerk followed.

Behind them, one attorney whispered:

“Oh my God.”

The officer stood alone on the steps.

His body camera still recording.

The courtroom deputy found the Judge inside chambers at eight fifty-eight.

She was standing in front of the mirror.

Her blazer lapel was wrinkled.

A faint red mark showed near her shoulder where fabric had pulled against skin.

The deputy stared.

“What happened?”

The Judge looked at the clock.

“Court starts in two minutes.”

The deputy did not move.

“Judge.”

She exhaled.

“There was an incident outside.”

“What incident?”

“Later.”

The deputy looked at the damaged briefcase.

Then at the Judge.

“Do you need medical attention?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

The deputy hesitated.

“What do you need?”

The Judge straightened the blazer.

“My robe.”

The deputy handed it over.

The Judge slipped it on.

Black fabric covered the wrinkled lapel.

Covered the red mark.
