“Of course.”

“Every security camera covering the sales floor.”

“Yes.”

“The original call to police.”

The manager hesitated.

The Black woman noticed.

“Who made it?”

The manager looked toward the sales associate.

Then back.

“I did.”

The sales associate immediately spoke.

“I told her you paid.”

The manager turned sharply.

“I know.”

“You said she was acting suspicious.”

The manager’s face reddened.

The Black woman looked between them.

“What exactly did you tell police?”

The manager did not answer immediately.

“Manager.”

Her voice was not loud.

It did not need to be.

“I said we had a possible shoplifter.”

“Did you say you saw me conceal merchandise?”

“No.”

“Did anyone?”

“No.”

“Did you say you had confirmed an item was missing?”

The manager swallowed.

“I believed one was.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“No.”

The Black woman nodded slowly.

“Good.”

The manager looked confused.

“Good?”

“Clarity is good.”

She returned the receipt to the counter.

“I want the facts clean before anyone starts rewriting them.”

The officer stiffened.

The Black woman looked at him.

“That includes you.”

He looked offended.

“I’m going to write exactly what happened.”

“Excellent.”

She lifted her phone.

“So will everyone else.”

The customer nearest the counter raised hers slightly.

“I got most of it.”

Another customer said, “Me too.”

The officer’s expression changed again.

The store manager looked as though she wanted the floor to open beneath her.

Then the boutique doors opened.

A uniformed supervisor entered.

The officer straightened immediately.

That reaction told the Black woman something.

The supervisor looked around.

Handcuffs still visible in the officer’s hand.

Several customers recording.

The manager pale.

The Black woman standing beside the receipt.

He stopped.

“What happened?”

The officer answered first.

“Reported shoplifting. Subject refused cooperation. Detained pending investigation. Store has now located the merchandise.”

The Black woman stared at him.

Subject.

That word interested her.

The supervisor looked toward the manager.

“Nothing was stolen?”

“No.”

The supervisor turned back.

“Then why was she in cuffs?”

The officer’s expression tightened.

“She refused commands and obstructed the investigation.”

The Black woman spoke.

“I declined a search of my personal tote until someone identified what was allegedly stolen.”

The supervisor looked at her.

“Were you physically resisting?”

“No.”

“Did you try to leave?”

“No.”

“Did you threaten anyone?”

“No.”

The supervisor looked at the officer.

The officer said, “She was argumentative.”

The Black woman almost smiled.

The supervisor did not.

“That’s not a crime.”

The officer’s face changed.

The Black woman looked at the supervisor.

That sentence mattered.
