The judge lifted the gavel.

The Black teen looked at it and understood that a piece of polished wood was about to divide his life into two parts.

Everything before this moment.

And everything after.

He stood in front of the bench wearing an orange county-jail uniform with his wrists cuffed in front of him.

He was eighteen years old.

He looked younger.

Not because his face was childish.

Because fear had stripped away everything he had spent the last year pretending to be.

Confident.

Angry.

Unbreakable.

Now there was only exhaustion.

His mother sat three rows behind him with both hands wrapped around a tissue she had stopped using ten minutes earlier.

His younger sister sat beside her, staring at the floor.

The defense attorney stood at the teen’s left shoulder.

The prosecutor stood at the opposite table.

Every seat in the courtroom was filled.

Reporters.

Relatives.

Police officers.

Curious strangers.

People who had followed the case online and believed they already understood what had happened.

The judge leaned forward.

Gray hair.

Rectangular glasses.

Black robe.

Hard expression.

He had presided over the trial.

He had listened to seven days of testimony.

He had watched the jury return a guilty verdict.

Now he was prepared to impose the sentence required by law.

The teen looked at him.

The judge said:

“You had the opportunity to address this court.”

The teen swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

“You continue to maintain your innocence.”

“Yes.”

The judge’s expression tightened.

“The jury considered the evidence.”

The teen said nothing.

“The verdict has been entered.”

Still nothing.

The judge continued.

“This court cannot sentence based on what you wish the evidence had shown.”

That sentence finally reached something inside the teen.

He lifted his head.

“That’s not what I said.”

His attorney touched his arm.

“Don’t.”

The teen looked at the judge.

“I said they didn’t look at all of it.”

The prosecutor exhaled sharply.

The judge’s eyes hardened.

“This is not the time to retry your case.”

The teen’s voice trembled.

“I’m not trying to retry anything.”

His attorney whispered:

“Stop.”

The teen ignored him.

“Somebody deleted the part that showed where I actually was.”

The judge set the gavel down for a moment.

“You have made that allegation repeatedly.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Your attorney had the opportunity to challenge the video.”

“They challenged a copy.”

The courtroom became quieter.

The teen’s mother looked up.

The judge said:

“The jury heard testimony about the timestamp.”

“They heard what the detective said.”

The teen’s voice cracked.

“They never saw the original file.”

The prosecutor rose.

“Your Honor—”

The judge raised one hand.

The prosecutor sat.

The judge looked back at the teen.

“Do you understand what today is?”

The teen’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“Then behave accordingly.”

The teen stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

His attorney closed his eyes.

The judge leaned forward.

“It means this court is sentencing you following a lawful conviction.”

The teen’s breathing became uneven.

He looked toward his mother.

Then back toward the bench.
