The Black Woman nodded.

“Unidentified.”

“That’s correct.”

The Woman reached inside her handbag again.

This time she removed her driver’s license.

She held it out.

The Manager did not take it.

“You need a valid hotel reservation.”

“I gave you my key.”

“We’ve covered this.”

“No.”

The Woman’s voice sharpened for the first time.

“You refused to cover it.”

The Manager’s face hardened.

Behind her, the security guard began approaching.

He was a large Black man in his forties wearing a dark hotel security suit.

The Manager saw him and gestured.

“Security.”

The Black Woman looked toward him.

The officer stopped several feet away.

He had spent years in hotel security.

He recognized two things immediately.

The guest was calm.

The Manager was angry.

That usually meant trouble.

The Manager pointed toward the entrance.

“Escort her out.”

The officer looked at the Black Woman.

Then at the Manager.

“Has she threatened anyone?”

“No.”

“Damaged property?”

“No.”

“Refused to leave?”

“I’m instructing her now.”

The officer paused.

The Manager’s eyes narrowed.

“Is there a problem?”

He looked toward the Black Woman.

“Ma’am, do you have a reservation?”

“Yes.”

“May I see the key?”

The Woman handed it over.

The Manager interrupted.

“I already checked it.”

The Black Woman looked straight at her.

“No, you didn’t.”

The security officer heard.

His expression changed.

He turned the card over.

His eyes fell on the gold stripe.

His posture straightened slightly.

“Where did you get this?”

The Manager snapped.

“Do not interrogate her here.”

Interesting.

Seconds earlier the Manager had wanted the Woman removed for being unidentified.

Now she did not want security examining the card.

The Woman noticed.

So did the officer.

He walked toward a small wall terminal near the elevators.

The Manager stepped in front of him.

“Give it back.”

The officer stopped.

“Why?”

“I’m handling this.”

“You asked me to remove her.”

“And now I’m telling you I’ve handled it.”

The officer’s eyes moved from the Manager to the guest.

The Black Woman said quietly:

“Scan it.”

The Manager’s voice sharpened.

“That will not be necessary.”

The Woman smiled for the first time.

“Now I’m sure it is.”

The Manager looked toward the surrounding employees.

People had stopped pretending not to watch.

A guest near the bar had raised his phone.

The Manager noticed.

Her expression shifted.

She stepped closer to the Black Woman.

“Ma’am, this is your final warning.”

The Woman did not move.

The Manager pointed toward the revolving doors.

“Leave this hotel.”

The entire lobby went quiet.

The Black Woman reached into her handbag.

Not hurriedly.
