Then picked up the phone.

He held it rather than handing it over.

“Number?”

The Homeowner gave one.

The Deputy dialed.

Placed the call on speaker.

A professional voice answered.

The Homeowner did not identify the person by name.

He simply said:

“This is me.”

The voice immediately changed.

“Are you secure?”

The deputies looked at each other.

The Homeowner answered:

“I am restrained outside my residence.”

Silence.

Then:

“Location?”

The Homeowner gave the address.

“Agency?”

He looked at the deputies' uniforms.

“County sheriff.”

“Badge numbers?”

The Homeowner looked directly at the older Deputy.

“Read me your badge number.”

The Deputy scoffed.

“You’re kidding.”

The Homeowner looked toward the body camera.

“Badge number.”

The younger Deputy gave his.

The older one hesitated.

Then eventually gave his too.

The Homeowner repeated both.

The voice on the phone said:

“Do not discuss substance. Stay where you are.”

The call ended.

The older Deputy laughed.

“That it?”

“Yes.”

“That your lawyer?”

“No.”

“Supervisor?”

“No.”

“Friend?”

“No.”

The Deputy placed the phone back on the hood.

“Nobody’s coming to save you.”

The Homeowner looked at him.

“I didn't ask anyone to save me.”

The Deputy smiled.

“Sure.”

Forty-three seconds later, the sheriff supervisor’s radio came alive.

Not the deputies’.

The supervisor had not yet arrived.

But county dispatch suddenly called the unit.

Urgent.

The younger Deputy listened.

His face changed.

The older Deputy frowned.

“What?”

The radio traffic repeated.

Both deputies became still.

A supervisor was en route.

Immediate preservation order for all body-camera footage.

Do not delete.

Do not pause.

Do not mute.

Do not release detained subject from scene until command arrives unless medically necessary.

The older Deputy looked toward the Homeowner.

“What did you do?”

The Homeowner answered:

“Made a call.”

The younger Deputy stepped closer to his partner.

“This feels bad.”

The older Deputy whispered:

“Shut up.”

A dark sheriff SUV appeared at the end of the street.

Then another vehicle behind it.

Not sheriff.

Dark government SUV.

No markings.

Neighbors moved closer.

Phones remained raised.

The Black Homeowner stood in handcuffs between the deputies.

Calm.

The Sheriff Supervisor exited first.

Older.

Gray at the temples.

He walked quickly.

No small talk.

“What happened?”

The older Deputy immediately began.
