At the black bag.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“I saw where she got that.”

Margaret's expression changed.

Very slightly.

Daniel noticed.

Sophie lifted her phone.

“Mr. Keller gave it to her.”

Margaret laughed too quickly.

“What nonsense.”

Sophie looked at Daniel.

“I recorded it.”

The backyard became silent.

Even the pool pump seemed suddenly louder.

Daniel looked at his daughter.

“You recorded what?”

“Mr. Keller was by the side fence.”

Douglas Keller.

HOA vice president.

Fifty-seven.

Owner of a small commercial waste-hauling company.

Margaret's closest ally on the board.

Daniel felt cold despite the summer heat.

Sophie continued.

“I was filming Muffin chasing the sprinkler.”

Muffin was the Carters’ overweight beagle.

“I saw Mr. Keller's truck outside.”

She swallowed.

“He handed Mrs. Whitmore the black bag.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“Give me that phone.”

Daniel immediately moved between them.

“No.”

Margaret pointed.

“She is a child recording adults without permission.”

“Stay away from my daughter.”

“You have no idea what she thinks she saw.”

Sophie looked at her screen.

“I can show Dad.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

Daniel held out his hand.

Sophie gave him the phone.

The video began with exactly what she described.

Muffin.

Sprinkler.

Sophie laughing.

Then her camera moved toward the side yard after an engine sounded.

Through gaps in the hedge, Douglas Keller stood beside a dark SUV.

Margaret stood outside the locked pool fence.

Douglas removed a black plastic bag from the rear cargo area.

He handed it to Margaret.

Audio carried only fragments because Sophie was far away.

Douglas:

“...make sure…”

Margaret:

“...enough…”

Then something clearer.

Douglas said:

“Don't leave the bag.”

Margaret answered:

“I know.”

The video moved because Sophie apparently tried getting closer.

Margaret looked toward the house.

Then climbed onto a decorative stone planter.

Grabbed the top rail of Daniel’s pool fence.

Swung one leg over.

The recording ended as Sophie gasped.

Daniel looked up.

Margaret’s face had lost all color.

He pressed the video back to the beginning.

Played it again.

Slower.

Same.

Black bag.

Douglas.

Transfer.

Fence.

Daniel looked at Margaret.

“You were saying?”

Margaret recovered quickly.

“That's not what it looks like.”

“What does it look like?”

“Keller found medical trash near the community walking path.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“So you carried it over my locked fence and dumped it into my pool?”

“I was documenting contamination.”

“By creating it?”

Margaret folded her arms.

“I was trying to demonstrate how easily unsafe materials could enter your property.”

Daniel stared at her.

“That may be the stupidest sentence you've ever said.”

Her jaw tightened.

“Watch your tone.”

“You climbed into my backyard and dumped used syringes into water my daughter swims in.”

“Your daughter is fine.”

“That has nothing to do with what you did.”

Margaret pointed toward the pool.

“You've been hostile toward the association for months.”

“No.”

“I've asked you to cite rules.”

“That's not hostility.”

“You've challenged fines.”

“Because three were invalid.”

“You've embarrassed the board.”

“There it is.”
