Marcus clicked the camera cover into place. “Because most problems don’t announce themselves first.”

“Like Karen?”

“Like anything.”

Caleb looked across the yard, where Sophie, Mia, and two younger neighbors were playing near the pool. Their laughter rose into the evening air, the same sound Karen had tried to punish. “You ever think about taking them down?”

“Sometimes.”

“But you don’t.”

Marcus smiled. “Cameras are cheap.”

Caleb laughed. “You sound old.”

“I am old.”

“You’re forty-five.”

“Ancient.”

They walked back toward the patio together. Above the door, the original camera had been replaced by a newer one, but it watched the same stretch of grass and water. Nothing marked the place where the rats had hit the surface. No sign, no bare patch, no permanent scar in the pool. Just a backyard.

That was how Marcus wanted it.

Because the most important part of the story was never that Karen faced consequences, though she did. It was never that the HOA changed its rules, though it needed to. It was never even that a camera proved the truth, though Marcus thanked God it had.

The most important part was that the children came back outside.

They laughed again. They ran again. They jumped into the pool again. They treated the yard like what it had always been—not a crime scene, not a disputed property line, not a place where an angry neighbor’s bitterness got the final word. Home.

Karen had thrown the rats because she thought fear would make them quiet. In the end, all she accomplished was leaving behind a recording of the moment everyone finally understood who had been creating the real disturbance all along.
