Connie Draper stood up from the second row. Her voice shook, but it held. “I was pressured by Shelley to vote in favor of resolutions I hadn’t read. She told me they were routine maintenance approvals. I didn’t know the money was going to Wade’s company until Garrett showed me the records.” The room was silent. Not uncomfortable silent. Jury-deliberation silent.

I stood. I looked at Shelley. I looked at the room. “My father poured this driveway with his own hands in 1991. He worked sixty-hour weeks on the road so he could come home to a house that was his. He fought for this country. He raised me on that concrete. And while I was in Savannah picking up his flag, this board painted over his handprint and turned his driveway into a parking lot. The only thing getting repurposed today is your presidency.”

The vote was forty-one to three. Shelley Bancroft was removed as HOA president. Wade resigned from the board before the vote was even counted. As they left the meeting, a process server I had hired stepped forward. He handed Shelley a civil lawsuit. Property damage. Business interference. Emotional distress. Fraud. On camera. Pam caught every second. The lawsuit papers slapped the table when Shelley dropped them. The sound echoed off the clubhouse walls. Nobody picked them up for her.

And that was not the end. That was just the beginning of the consequences.
