Brenda hugged her clipboard to her chest as though it were a shield. “This is a conspiracy,” she declared loudly, ensuring the growing crowd heard every word. “Mr. Mitchell has been conducting an ongoing campaign of violations against community standards, and now he’s weaponizing law enforcement against legitimate HOA activity.” She turned to the bystanders. “You all know me. I’ve upheld property values for seven years.”

A few of them did know her. That was the problem. One man nodded out of habit and then stopped nodding when he saw the cuffs were not out yet but were about to be. “Ma’am,” Officer Daniels repeated, in a voice full of saint-like patience, “last warning. Exit voluntarily, or we will remove you and place you under arrest.”

Brenda responded by clicking her seat belt into place and gripping the handle with both hands. She had already been belted. She clicked it again anyway, a second theatrical lock, as if two clicks made a legal argument. Daniels sighed the sigh of a man who had given the warning he was required to give. “Very well, ma’am. You’re under arrest for criminal trespassing and attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.”

What followed was the most dignified yet absurd arrest I have ever seen. Brenda refused to unbuckle. Officer Ramirez had to reach across her while she shouted about HOA sovereignty, which, just to be clear, is not a real thing. She named the subsection again. She named the gnomes. She named her husband’s golf tournament, as if his absence were a public emergency the state was obliged to solve with my car. Once they finally extracted her from the seat, she demanded that the officers allow her to file a formal complaint with the HOA board before they took her to jail. Daniels gently informed her that she would have plenty of time for complaints at the station. As they cuffed her, Brenda managed to turn back to the crowd, shouting, “Contact Vice President Reynolds. Tell him to activate emergency protocol 7. Document this illegal detention. Check subsection 47B.”

Several people were filming. Definitely not in support. One video caught her shoes leaving my floor mat. Another caught the laminated card falling and Ramirez picking it up, not as evidence of office, but as property to be logged. I stayed with the car until they told me I could go. The latte was cold. The breeze was still seventy-two. The song was gone. I drove home with the top up, which was the first time in months I had put it up out of something other than weather.
