Peter hesitated.

“Isn’t that someone’s seat?”

“They can move.”

Peter glanced toward the flight attendant.

She heard.

“Mr. Shaw, please use your assigned seat.”

Peter immediately nodded.

“Of course.”

Douglas muttered something.

Then Maya’s chief operating officer boarded.

A white man in his early forties named Eric Donnelly.

Eric saw Maya.

“Morning, boss.”

Maya looked up.

“Morning.”

Douglas heard it.

He looked toward Eric.

Then Maya.

His expression changed briefly.

But instead of reconsidering, he chose a new assumption.

Boss could mean team lead.

Department head.

Project manager.

His original judgment remained intact.

That was how confirmation worked.

Evidence that challenged the story was reinterpreted until the story survived.

Ten minutes later, a catering worker entered to adjust a cooler.

Douglas stood to retrieve something from his overhead bag.

Maya’s carry-on shifted slightly when he moved his own.

He pulled hers out.

Maya looked up.

“Excuse me.”

Douglas set it in the aisle.

“I need the space.”

“That is my bag.”

“I know.”

“Put it back.”

He looked at her.

“I’m moving it to the rear compartment.”

“No.”

He sighed.

“There’s room back there.”

“There’s room above my seat.”

“It’s blocking my bag.”

“You have an entire empty compartment above row two.”

Douglas’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t need two pieces at your seat.”

Maya closed her laptop.

“Do not move my property.”

People began watching.

The flight attendant returned.

“Sir, please put the bag back.”

Douglas looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because it belongs to another passenger.”

“I’m reorganizing the compartment.”

“She asked you not to.”

Douglas stared.

Then put the bag on the floor instead of overhead.

“There.”

Maya stood.

“Put it back where you found it.”

He laughed.

“Sit down.”

That was the moment the mood changed completely.

Maya looked at him.

“Do not tell me to sit down.”

Douglas held up a hand.

“You’re making this much bigger than it needs to be.”

“No.”

Maya’s voice became colder.

“You took my property after I told you not to.”

The flight attendant stepped between them.

“Sir, return the bag.”

Douglas looked around.

Passengers were staring now.

His pride took over.

“This is absurd.”

The attendant said:

“Sir.”

Douglas grabbed the handle again.

“I’m giving it to the crew.”

Maya put one hand on the suitcase.

“No.”

Both held it.

The flight attendant raised her voice.

“Let go of the bag.”

Douglas released it.

Maya pulled the suitcase toward herself.

The attendant looked at him.

“That is your second warning.”

Douglas frowned.

“Second?”

“You were told to remain in your assigned seat during boarding and not interfere with other passengers.”

“I’m trying to solve a problem.”

“There is no problem.”

He looked toward Maya.

“The problem is that someone clearly doesn’t belong in this section.”

Silence.

Maya stared at him.
