Ryan opened his mouth, closed it, tried again. “I don’t know why I came to this door,” he said. “Probably because it felt less official,” Ethan said. Ryan looked at him. “Can I—” He stopped, swallowed. “I just wanted to say something and then I’ll go.” “Say it,” Ethan said. Ryan stood there for a moment, and Ethan watched him fighting with it. Whatever it was, the thing he’d come here to say, the thing that had apparently been sitting in him for four days, like something he couldn’t digest.

“I’ve been in training for three years,” Ryan said. “Real training, not messing around. I’ve fought twenty-three amateur bouts. I’ve beaten guys twice my size.” He paused. “I’ve never—nobody has ever—” He stopped. His jaw worked. “I didn’t touch you. I couldn’t. I couldn’t even—” “No,” Ethan said quietly. “You couldn’t.” “Who are you?” Ryan said, and it was his father’s question, but from a completely different place. Not strategic curiosity, not the calculation of a businessman reassessing an asset. This was raw. This was a twenty-year-old who had built his entire identity on being the most dangerous thing in any room, asking the question with genuine and slightly desperate sincerity.

Ethan looked at him for a long moment. “Come inside,” he said. Ryan blinked. “What?” “I said come inside. I’ll make coffee. You can ask your questions and I’ll answer them honestly.” He paused. “Or you can stand there. Either way.” A long beat. Ryan stepped inside.

Ethan made coffee. Ryan sat at the kitchen table looking around the kitchen with the expression of someone recalibrating everything they thought they knew about a space. There were photos on the refrigerator. Lily at twelve at a camping trip. Lily at eight laughing at something off camera. A photo of Ethan and a group of men in desert gear whose faces were partially obscured by hats and sunglasses, but whose posture told everything. Ryan stared at the last photo for a long time.

Ethan put coffee in front of him, sat down across from him. “Ask,” he said. Ryan looked at the photo one more time, then at Ethan. “How long?” he said. “Fifteen years,” Ethan said. “Reconnaissance specialist. I was embedded in the kind of environments where if you make one mistake, you don’t come home. Every skill I have was built for those environments. Every reflex, everything you saw on Saturday, that’s not gym training. That’s fifteen years of situations where failure wasn’t an option.”

Ryan absorbed that. His hands were wrapped around the coffee mug. “And you just—you live here. You mow your lawn. You make lunches.” He said it without contempt, which was new. He said it with something that sounded like genuine bafflement. “How do you—how do you just do that?” Ethan looked at him. “Because this,” he said, “is what I fought for. Not the missions, not the medals. This, the lawn, the lunches, her.” He nodded toward the photos on the refrigerator. “Everything I did over there, every single thing was so that this could exist. You understand?”

Ryan said nothing. But his eyes went to the refrigerator again, to Lily’s photo at twelve at the camping trip, laughing at something nobody in the room could see. And something shifted in his face. Not dramatically. Not in a way that would make a good movie moment. Just quietly the way real things should. A small rearrangement of understanding. A piece moving to a place it should have been for a long time.

“I was an idiot,” Ryan said. His voice was flat, direct, no performance in it. “Yes,” Ethan said. “I could have—” he stopped. “If you’d actually fought back, if you’d wanted to hurt me—” “Yes,” Ethan said again. Ryan stared at the table. He pressed his palms flat against the surface, a gesture Ethan noticed that was almost identical to his own morning habit. Feeling the ground beneath you, reminding yourself you’re here.
