"Mr. Chen," she purred, completely ignoring me. "Harrison and I were just saying how we simply must have you out to the Hamptons this summer. " She placed a manicured hand on his arm, a clear act of staking a claim. Mr. Chen, a consummate professional, simply smiled.

"Eleanor, a pleasure. I was just having a fascinating conversation with Mr. Thorne here about the future of cybersecurity. " He gestured to me, forcing her to acknowledge my existence. Elena's eyes finally landed on me. They were chips of ice.

Mr. Thorne, she said, her voice dripping with mock sweetness. Of course, how novel. It must be so exciting for you to be in a room like this. The insult was clear.

You don't belong here. I kept my expression neutral. It's always a pleasure to support a good cause, Mrs. Vance, I replied, my voice calm and even. Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second.

My refusal to be rattled was infuriating her. She wanted a reaction. She wanted me to get angry, to make a scene, to prove that I was exactly the kind of uncultured upstart she believed me to be. I turned back to Mr. Chen to continue our conversation, a polite but firm dismissal of her.

And that's when it happened. With a tiny theatrical gasp, Elena tripped. Tripped. Her body lurched forward in a movement that was just a little too deliberate, a little too controlled. The glass of red wine in her hand flew in a perfect, horrifying arc, leaving her fingers and splashing directly onto the front of my chest.

The cold shock of the liquid hit me first, followed by the immediate spreading stain on my custom-tailored white tuxedo jacket. The room fell silent. Every eye was on us. The murmur of conversation died, replaced by a thick, expectant hush. The wine dripped from my jacket onto the polished marble floor.

For a moment, nobody moved. Then, Elena straightened up, dabbing at her empty hand with a cocktail napkin. She looked at the giant crimson stain blooming across my chest, and a slow, cruel smile spread across her face. Oh my, she said, her voice loud enough for everyone to hear. Clumsy me.

But then again, she added, her eyes gleaming with triumph, "It is an improvement, don't you think? " The crowd gasped, and as I stood there, humiliated and dripping, her billionaire husband, Harrison Vance, simply chuckled. He caught my eye from across the room, raised his own glass in a mock toast, and gave me a slow, deliberate wink. They thought they had won. They thought they had put me in my place. They had no idea they'd just signed the death warrant for their entire dynasty.

For a long moment, I didn't move. I just stood there, the cold, sticky wine seeping through my shirt, feeling the weight of a hundred pairs of eyes. I could hear Elena's faint, satisfied breathing. She was waiting for me to explode, to yell, to fulfill her cartoonish stereotype of the angry black man. She wanted me to give her a show, to validate her pathetic act of dominance.
