Motorcycles.

Men.

Police uniforms.

Then landed on him.

She stared.

The Lead Biker did not know what she saw.

A stranger.

An old man.

The face from a photograph.

Her grandfather.

The girl whispered, “You have the scar.”

The Lead Biker felt his chest tighten.

“What?”

She pointed to his cheek.

“Mom said Grandpa has a scar here.”

The Lead Biker touched it unconsciously.

The girl looked toward his vest.

Then at the old photograph in his hand.

Her shoulders dropped slightly.

“You’re him.”

The Lead Biker nodded.

“I think so.”

One biker almost laughed at the strange answer.

Nobody did.

The child looked at the photograph.

“Mom said you’d be bigger.”

That broke the tension.

A few men looked away to hide smiles.

The Lead Biker nearly laughed.

“I used to be.”

The girl studied him.

Then the fear returned.

“Where’s Mom?”

He had no answer.

Not one he trusted.

So he told the truth.

“We’re trying to find her.”

The girl looked toward the officers.

“Is she in trouble?”

The Lead Biker remained kneeling.

“I don’t know.”

“She told me not to wait if she didn’t come back.”

“How long ago?”

The girl looked down.

“Yesterday.”

Every man in the garage became still again.

The older officer crouched lower.

“Can I ask what happened yesterday?”

The girl immediately moved closer to the Doberman.

The Lead Biker remembered the note.

Please don’t ask her to explain everything before you help her.

He raised one hand toward the officer.

“Maybe not yet.”

The officer looked at him.

Then nodded.

“Fair.”

The Lead Biker turned toward the girl.

“You hungry?”

She shrugged.

That meant yes.

One of the bikers disappeared immediately.

Another brought water.

Another found a clean blanket from the office.

The girl watched all of them suspiciously.

The Lead Biker remained close without crowding her.

The Doberman seemed to approve.

A biker returned carrying a paper plate.

Turkey sandwich.

Apple slices.

Potato chips.

The girl stared.

“Do you have ketchup?”

The entire garage relaxed by half an inch.

The biker nodded seriously.

“We can find ketchup.”

He returned with four packets.

The girl ate slowly.

The Lead Biker sat on the concrete across from her.

No chair.

No authority posture.

Just an old biker on the floor.

She looked at him between bites.

“Mom said you ride motorcycles.”
