Speck slowly lifted both hands.

The convoy closed the final distance.

Brakes hissed.

Engines thundered.

Doors opened.

Major Selene Ado stepped from the lead vehicle wearing protective gear and identification.

Her team spread outward.

Controlled.

Disciplined.

No shouting beyond what was necessary.

Ado walked directly toward Bowford.

“Sir.”

She looked at his wrists.

“Are you injured?”

“Not seriously.”

“Those restraints need to come off.”

Speck suddenly spoke.

“I was conducting a lawful traffic stop.”

Nobody looked at him.

Ado examined the cuffs.

“Key?”

Cowell pointed.

“He has it.”

Speck swallowed.

“I can remove them.”

Bowford said:

“No.”

Ado looked toward a team member.

“Cut them.”

A tool appeared.

Two quick metallic snaps.

The cuffs fell onto the pavement.

Bowford brought his hands forward.

Red grooves circled both wrists.

One had already begun swelling.

Ado’s face tightened.

“Medic?”

“Later.”

Bowford rolled his shoulders.

“Perimeter?”

“Secure.”

“County officer?”

“Disarmed.”

Cowell spoke quickly.

“I did not participate in the detention.”

Ado looked at him.

“We’ll take statements.”

Cowell nodded.

Speck stared at Bowford.

“Colonel.”

Bowford looked toward him.

“We can work this out.”

Nobody moved.

Speck continued.

“I made a bad call.”

Bowford said nothing.

“I’ll admit that.”

Silence.

“You drive away.”

“I go back.”

“We let supervisors handle it.”

Bowford’s expression remained unreadable.

Speck added:

“Come on.”

“I’ve been doing this eleven years.”

That sentence produced the first visible change in Bowford’s face.

Not surprise.

Something sadder.

“Eleven years.”

Speck nodded quickly.

“I have a family.”

Bowford looked at him for a long moment.

Then said:

“You had eleven years to become a different kind of officer.”

Speck’s mouth closed.

Fourteen minutes later, Sheriff Milo Cranston arrived.

He came fast.

Two county cruisers behind him.

He stepped from his SUV and stopped.

Armored vehicles.

Tactical personnel.

Speck seated on the roadside.

Cowell separated.

Bowford standing free.

Cranston’s expression collapsed into the look of a man realizing this was not something he could solve with a phone call.

He walked forward slowly.
