Hayes stood next. “These are Rex and Nova’s complete military service records. Both dogs have spotless behavioral evaluations spanning four years of active duty. No incidents of inappropriate aggression. No failures of command response.” The documentation was overwhelming. Training certifications, mission reports, behavioral assessments. Everything proved the dogs were disciplined military assets, not dangerous animals. “Officer Cole,” Investigator Daniels called, “please provide your testimony.” Cole stood slowly, his face pale but determined. Martinez, his union representative, nodded encouragement. “Sergeant Mercer ordered me to shut off my body camera after Major Brooks identified herself as military,” Cole stated clearly. “He said we needed to change our reports to make the dogs look like the threat.”

The room erupted. Mercer shot to his feet, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. “That’s a lie,” Mercer roared. “You’re covering for her because you’re too weak to do your job.” Cole did not flinch. “He told us the report had to show Rex and Nova were aggressive, even though we all saw they never broke discipline. You lying piece of—” Mercer surged forward, crossing the room toward Cole with his fists clenched. Investigator Daniels and another officer immediately blocked Mercer’s path, forcing him back toward his chair. “Sergeant Mercer, control yourself.” Captain Hollis stood abruptly. “I demand this hearing be stopped immediately. Officer Cole’s testimony is clearly compromised.” “The hearing continues,” Daniels declared firmly. “Sit down, Captain.”

Mercer was breathing hard, his face twisted with rage. “Cole is lying to save his own career. He’s manufacturing evidence.” “Actually,” Daniels replied calmly, “Officer Cole’s preserved body-camera footage has been recovered from department servers.” He gestured to the technical specialist operating the display equipment. “We’re going to listen to exactly what Sergeant Mercer said after Major Brooks was released.” The room fell silent as the specialist loaded the audio file. Mercer’s face went completely white. “Play the recording,” Daniels ordered.

The audio began playing with crystal clarity across the hearing room. Cole’s body camera had captured everything. After Nia was released that afternoon, Mercer’s voice came through the speakers, sharp and commanding. “Listen carefully, both of you. We need to fix this mess before it gets out of hand.” Cole’s recorded voice responded hesitantly. “Sarge, what do you mean, fix it?” “The report, you idiot,” Mercer snapped on the recording. “That woman just made us look like fools in front of half the neighborhood. Military canines? Are you kidding me?” Rusk’s voice joined the conversation. “But the dogs never actually did anything aggressive.” “Shut up and listen,” Mercer interrupted harshly. “Her military status makes this dangerous for all of us. If command reviews this footage and sees we harassed a decorated soldier for no reason, we’re screwed.” The present-day Mercer sat frozen in his chair, sweat beading on his forehead as his own words condemned him. “So here’s what happened,” his recorded voice continued, with calculated coldness. “Those dogs became aggressive when we approached. They moved into attack positions and forced us to retreat for officer safety. Major Brooks used military animals to threaten police during a lawful investigation.” “But that’s not what—” Cole started to protest on the recording. “That’s exactly what happened,” Mercer cut him off viciously. “You got that, Cole? Both of you write it up that way. Make the dogs the threat, not us. We were responding to aggressive animals that posed a danger to public safety.”

Investigator Daniels paused the playback. The room was completely silent except for Mercer’s ragged breathing. “There’s more,” Daniels announced, restarting the audio. Captain Hollis’s voice suddenly joined the conversation on the recording. “What’s the situation here?” “Just briefing the officers on their reports, Captain,” Mercer replied smoothly. “We had an incident with aggressive military dogs and an uncooperative handler.” “Military?” Hollis’s recorded voice sharpened with concern. “How military?” “Active-duty major. But she threatened officers with trained attack animals, so we’re justified in our response.” There was a pause before Hollis spoke again, his tone becoming calculating. “Make sure your reports match exactly before anyone reviews the body-camera footage. We can’t have conflicting accounts of officer-safety incidents.” “Understood, Captain. The dogs were aggressive and forced a tactical retreat. That’s the official account.” “Good. I’ll handle any follow-up from command. Just stick to that version.”

Daniels stopped the recording and stared directly at Hollis. “Captain, do you recognize your own voice approving a falsified account of this incident?” Hollis shot to his feet, his face flushed with panic. “That conversation is being taken completely out of context. I was simply ensuring proper documentation of a legitimate threat assessment.” “You ordered officers to coordinate false reports,” Daniels stated flatly. “Then you signed approval of those reports despite having access to contradictory footage.” Hayes stood and placed a stack of documents on the table. “These are the signed incident reports Captain Hollis approved. Each one claims Rex and Nova displayed aggressive behavior that never occurred.” “Furthermore,” Patterson added coldly, “Captain Hollis had full access to all body-camera footage before approving these reports. He knew they were false.” Hollis slammed his hand on the table. “I was protecting my officers from a politically motivated complaint. That woman was looking for trouble from the moment she refused to cooperate.”

Mercer suddenly exploded from his chair, whirling toward Nia with pure rage in his eyes. “You destroyed my career, you arrogant soldier!” he screamed, spittle flying from his lips. “Twenty years on the force, and you ruined everything with those attack dogs.” Nia remained perfectly still, her voice calm and steady when she responded. “You destroyed your own career, Sergeant. I just refused to let you destroy Rex and Nova to cover it up.” “I should have had those mutts put down the first day,” Mercer raged, taking another step toward her. Two investigators immediately moved to restrain him as security officers entered the room. “Sergeant Wade Mercer,” Investigator Daniels announced formally, “you’re under arrest for falsifying official reports, obstruction of justice, and evidence tampering.” “Get your hands off me,” Mercer snarled as officers approached with handcuffs. “This is all nonsense. She set me up from the beginning.” The lead security officer removed Mercer’s service weapon and badge before securing the handcuffs around his wrists. “You have the right to remain silent.” As Mercer was led away, still screaming about conspiracy and injustice, Daniels turned to Hollis. “Captain Grant Hollis, you are hereby relieved of command, pending criminal investigation for conspiracy and abuse of authority.” Two additional officers stepped forward to escort Hollis from the room as he continued protesting his innocence.

The disciplinary hearing room emptied slowly as officials gathered their documents and evidence files. Nia remained seated at the witness table, watching prosecutors and military liaisons huddle in quiet conversations near the front of the room. Rex and Nova lay calmly at her feet, their breathing steady and controlled despite the chaos that had just unfolded. Prosecutor Hayes approached first, carrying a thick manila folder. “Major Brooks, I need to inform you officially that the criminal complaint filed against you is being formally withdrawn.” Nia looked up from scratching Rex behind the ears. “Because it was based on false reports.” “Exactly. The charges relied entirely on fabricated police documentation. Without those reports, there’s no case.” Hayes set the folder on the table. “Additionally, the dangerous-dog classification has been permanently dismissed. Your canines are cleared of all allegations.”
